You take time out of your life to find the perfect outfit, the right shoes, the perfect movie, good music and the best education. But all to often, when it comes to our finances, people settle. They don't shop around for the best rate or loan packages to fit their situation. When it comes to lenders they often go with the first one that approves them.

Besides, these are loans you'll be stuck with for years. Here are a few places to begin your search for an affordable loan.

  • Mortgage companies
  • National and state commercial banks
  • Federal and state savings banks
  • Federal and state savings and loans
  • Mutual savings banks
  • Industrial banks
  • Insurance companies
  • Credit unions
  • Finance companies
  • Credit corporations
  • Mortgage brokers
  • Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, HUD, and other government agencies

How to Find Good Lenders

The first place to begin is by word of mouth. Ask your friends where they got their mortgages. Call these places, let them know that you are a referral customer, often they will offer preferred deals to customer referrals. Also, your local newspaper advertises lenders with low interest mortgages. The phone book is also a good place to search. Look under Banks, Real Estate Loans, Mortgages and Mortgage Loans. Call as many listings as you can. Your best rate may be one phone call away!

If at all possible, find the lender first and pre-qualify. This way you don't feel pressured or rushed to go with the first lender because you're afraid the house might not be on the market long. It will also help take the guess work out of whether you'll be able to afford this home or not. Some lenders will make you jump through hoops to get a loan and others will bend over backwards to give you one. But don't let this discourage you, sometimes, good things take a while to find. After qualifying, begin your search for your dream home.

When it comes to finding the right mortgage for you and your family, it is just as important as the perfect house you've searched so long to find. Don't skimp on it. Enjoy the house of your dreams with the mortgage of your dreams by taking your time to find the right lender, for you. Besides, you're worth it!
